For Isabelle (Izzy) Duseau of Hatfield, a hands-on approach to learning made a lasting impact on her life. With less than 200 students at Smith Academy, she was able to receive one-on-one attention from teachers and always secured extra academic help when she needed it. Now that she’s received her diploma, she’s had time to reflect on her High School experience and feels extremely lucky to have had the opportunity to attend such a special place.
“The school has such an incredible staff that I have so much respect for. They took the time to make sure we absorbed and truly understood the material,” Izzy recalls.
As a well-rounded student, it was important for Izzy to have a supportive learning environment where every student was seen, heard and appreciated. “The staff at Smith cares about every kid and wants them to become the best version of themselves both inside and outside the classroom,” Izzy says.
The teaching staff’s investment in their students was essential for Izzy as she spent much of her time outside the classroom. As a dedicated athlete, she played field hockey, participated in baseball and softball and even managed the girls’ basketball team. Because she was so involved in extra-curricular activities, it was imperative to have a core team of mentors to help achieve her goals.
“I’ll forever cherish and remember the incredible people I met at Smith Academy,” Izzy says. She continues, “Having my best friends there with me and teachers that never let me give up on my learning, along with coaches and teammates that consistently cheered me on was amazing. I just feel really fortunate to have had such a positive High School experience.”
Sadly, all good things must eventually come to an end. Izzy just wishes it all didn’t go by so fast. “The moment I walked across the stage to get my diploma I kept thinking that high school went by so quickly; it didn’t feel real. It felt like another graduation practice.” Izzy recalls.
Even though her days as a Smith Academy student are over, the bonds she created with her friends and teachers will be everlasting. “Having the opportunity to be surrounded by such great people every single day really motivated me to work harder and also made me realize the potential I had.” Izzy reflects.
She’ll be making the most of her potential this fall as a freshman at Merrimack College. Izzy will continue to be a student athlete as a member of the women’s field hockey team. “I’m not one hundred percent sure of what I want to do in the future but I’m excited to see where life takes me,” Izzy says with a smile.
